Effective January 1, 2009, Tenn. Code Ann. § 55-8-188 allows owners of certain low emission and energy efficient vehicles, commonly referred to as ‘hybrids’, to apply for decals that allow them to drive in high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes at any time on Tennessee’s interstates, regardless of the number of passengers present in the vehicle. Qualifying vehicles must display decals indicating that the vehicle is qualified to use the HOV lane and owners must make application for decals with the Department of Revenue. Qualified applicants may receive these decals at no cost.
